Animation shot 7

Decided from now on to do rough animation on flash before moving to photoshop. This is because i need the frame-count when im working and also so i can show tutors rough tests
heres the rough for shot 7

More look-tests

Here is another test, this time with a dark pink skin outline for the boy's skin, once again perhaps to help stress he is alive amoung fake holograms. Not sure what i think to this

Animation 2-2

Updated this shot; removed the blush from his cheeks and added a couple of cushioning frames and the new lighting as a test

Animation 4

Found this shot anoyingly tricky, and ended up videoing in own hand as a reference. think it looks okay now though

The Look of the Film

Im having trouble finding the right look for my boy against the rest of the characters. My tutors suggest me trying to differentiate him from the holographic creatures in the film

Here are some methods i tried to seperate him from the rabbit animal:

Skin colour:

Blush:

Blue vs Black lines:

Translucent animal:

Overall i think i prefer the blue lines for the animals, and black for the boy. I do not like the skin colour and would prefer all of the colours in my film to be cold (no reds, pinks, yellows).

Below is a slight lighting test. I want the environment to be white, but have a sense of bright lighting as well, so heres a version with a blue screen overlay. May experiment more with this. It will be important later in the film with the dragon blocking out the light source as he towers over the boy, etc

Rabbit

Here's the long overdue character sheet for the rabbit. Not very detailed but enough for me to be able to work from atleast. As it stands currently i am the only animator on this film, so for my own benefit this will be fine.

This creature started off as a Ferret and became a Rabbit...

Tablet Pen concept

As with the tablet, ive done some quick concepts for the pen the boy uses to draw with. In the animatic i worked with a design similar to the second one here, but i think it looks ugly and something simple and more recognisable as a tablet pen will be better. There is a shot where the boy switched the pen on at the end and it glows, so i've worked that into the design here. Not sure yet if the pen will stay glowing or if it will only happen at the switching on.

Tablet concept

Some clearer ideas for the drawing tablet in the film. I am leaning more towards the far right version

Animation 2

Second shot animated

Decided against the block skin colour and have tried some blush on his cheeks instead, though its hard to see on this upload. not sure why youtube bleaches the colours

Animation 1

Here is the first animation test; for the establishing shot of my film.

I have added skin tone to the boy to make him stand out as a living being amoung fictional holograms. I dont like it, but it will tell the story better

Dragon Redesigned

After feedback on tuesday, i realised that the body shape for my dragon was all wrong. it needed to be more balanced with a better shape to the spine, larger feet and tail and smaller head. Also with slightly wackier features to make it more like the creation of an 8 year old boy

Here is the new design. Much prefer this one

Final designs

This week rather than start on animation, i really wanted to nail down some final designs for my important characters. Here are the final ref sheets for the Boy and the Dragon in the film. I am taking a step backwards and returning to the sketchy style of lines and shading, to go with the theme of drawing. The dragon will have changing shadows, as it is meant to be a malfunctioned creature, and i want him to appear both scary and friendly, which is difficult with set shades. If i can change the shadows, i can help emphasis the emotion a bit. So he is pure white unlike the other creatures in the film, but with shadows when necessary.

Creatures

Here are some quick rough designs/ideas for the supporting creatures in the film. They are meant to be a mix of cybertronic and organic beings, which explains the robotic features combined with skin etc.

Final Animatic

Final because even if it needs changing i dont want to be wasting any more time on it. Any changes can be fixed during the animation stage now

The music track i bought fits very well with it. It may need some chopping and changing to get it to work better in places but i'll handle that after the animation, when i know the exact length of each shot etc

Overall very happy with it so far

Animatic progress

So unfortunately as there is alot of work involved in fixing up my animatic and putting it together with the audio, i'm unable to get it done before this friday submission. It should be done over the weekend though, so here is an apology and some preview shots to prove im not slacking off.

Animatic - First draft

Here is the first version of the animatic. it has changed alot now, but i wanted to show the original version as was before.

Storyboard that got cut

So after talking over with my tutors, we've decided to cut the second half of my film, or epilogue part. This is saddening but it does mean not so much stress when it comes to making it, and i can focus on making the more important section of the film look awesome.
Anyway, i had started storyboarding the epilogue so here is how far i got with it -->

Storyboard NEW - part 1

I realised after a lecture on storyboards that i needed to redo alot of mine. Since the first storyboard alot of things have changed such as character designs and setting, and i've changed my mind on certain shots. Here is the revamped storyboard for the first part of my film:
